Licensed Character

When an artist and/or writer creates a book that becomes so popular that one artist cannot create the illustrations for all the spinoffs, the publisher hires one or more artists with a similar style to help out, using the original, now “licensed,” characters from the first books. I’ve been privileged to work on many of the licensed spin off books of other great artists and writers, including the Care Bears, My Little Pony and Strawberry Shortcake. While the publishing houses usually facilitate this relationship, I occasionally work directly with the original artist, as on the Fancy Nancy books illustrated by the wonderful Robin Preiss Glasser. I’ve helped on over 20 of her books. Other licenses I’ve worked on are: The Magic School Bus (over 40 books), Henry And Mudge, Clifford, Eloise, Little People, Stuart Little, the Muppets, etc.
